An Embedded System is a combination of computer hardware and software designed for a specific function. Embedded systems may also function within a larger system. The systems can be programmable or have a fixed functionality.
Embedded systems range from those low in complexity, with a single microcontroller chip, to very high with multiple units, peripherals and networks, which may reside in equipment racks or across large geographical areas connected via long-distance communications lines.
Embedded systems with a single task to complete are fast and reliable. Compared to traditional computers, embedded systems are smaller, meaning they take up little space and are easily portable. Due to their small size, embedded systems require less power compared to larger systems.
